Figure AI has announced a partnership with BMW to deploy its Figure 02 humanoid robots on vehicle assembly lines at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. The robots will initially perform body shop tasks including welding inspection, part placement, and quality verification.
The Figure 02 features 40 degrees of freedom, advanced tactile sensing in its hands, and an onboard AI system that allows it to learn new tasks through demonstration rather than explicit programming. Each unit can master a new assembly task in under four hours.
BMW plans to deploy 50 robots in the initial phase, with expansion to 200 units by the end of 2026 if performance targets are met. The partnership represents the largest humanoid robot deployment in automotive manufacturing to date.
