Figure AI announced today that its Figure 02 humanoid robot has begun a commercial pilot program at BMW's manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, performing assembly line tasks alongside human workers.
The robot handles sub-assembly operations including inserting insulation materials, connecting wiring harnesses, and performing quality inspections using integrated vision systems. Figure reports the robot operates at 80 percent of human speed but with near-zero defect rates.
BMW plans to expand the pilot from five to fifty robots by the end of 2026 if performance metrics hold, potentially establishing a template for humanoid robot deployment across the automotive manufacturing industry.
