Google DeepMind has published research demonstrating an AI system capable of designing entirely new protein-based materials with properties not found in nature. The system, called ProteinForge, extends AlphaFold's protein structure prediction capabilities to generate proteins optimized for specific industrial applications.
In initial experiments, ProteinForge designed a biodegradable plastic alternative that decomposes in seawater within 90 days while maintaining structural integrity comparable to conventional polyethylene. The team also created a protein-based adhesive that bonds to wet surfaces with three times the strength of existing surgical glues.
