President Biden has signed an executive order establishing mandatory AI safety standards for artificial intelligence systems used in critical infrastructure sectors including energy, transportation, healthcare, and financial services. The order directs federal agencies to develop sector-specific requirements within 180 days.
Key provisions include mandatory pre-deployment testing for AI systems that could affect public safety, required incident reporting within 72 hours when AI systems cause or contribute to failures in critical infrastructure, and the creation of an AI Safety Review Board modeled on the National Transportation Safety Board.
The executive order also establishes a $500 million fund to support AI safety research at universities and national laboratories. Industry groups have largely supported the order, noting that clear federal standards provide regulatory certainty and could prevent a patchwork of conflicting state-level requirements that would be more difficult to navigate.
