An AI-powered severe weather prediction system provided a 30-minute tornado warning to residents of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, double the traditional warning time, enabling full evacuation of a mobile home community before an EF3 tornado struck.
The Save
The AI system, developed by the University of Alabama in partnership with Google, detected rotation patterns in radar data 30 minutes before the National Weather Service issued its warning.
Expansion Plans
NOAA is evaluating the system for nationwide deployment, which could extend average tornado warning times from 13 minutes to 25-30 minutes across the country.
- 30-minute advance tornado warning
- Double the traditional warning time
- Mobile home community fully evacuated
